Standard panel pet doors usually have a double-flap construction with one flap on each frame. These are usually made of flexible and clear PVC vinyl, generally of size 3/16″.
- Inner & outer Frames
The inner frame of panel doors may consist of two metal extrusions. Both these extrusions measure approximately 0.063″ wall thickness. Three sides of the frame may entrap the security cover. Outer frame will also be of 0.063″ wall thickness, which may be designed to perfectly sleeve into inside frame.
Commonly used magnets are “Alnico5”, which is an aluminium, nickel, and cobalt alloy, ensuring maximum strength and durability. Usually 1/4″ rod magnets of 1.5″ length are used. The number of magnets is determined based on the door size.
Strikes of panel pet doors are made of ferrous stainless steel with dimensions as 1.5″ x 0.75″ x 1.32″ or so. The strikers are usually ‘U’ shaped, featuring interior prongs which gets fixed firmly while pressed onto vinyl flap.
- Weather stripping
The flaps are surrounded by 0.5″ black nylon piles to ensure leak-proof insulation. In standard pet door models, nylon is also woven into the backing of 1/32″ thickness and 9/32″ width.
- Security Cover
Standard security covers are made of polymer sheets of 0.25″ thickness, which are in various colours as Black, White, Sanshade or Dolphin Gray etc. to match with the colour of the frame. These are highly shock resistant. There will also be a locking hole to hold these in place.

It is usually pull-type handles made of zinc alloys. There are also knobs with satin-nickel finish and the size can be 25/32” x 19/32” x 53/64”, which may also have a 1/2” x 21/32” finger hole. The cover handle is attached to the cover with screws. There may also be a pin lock integrated to the cover handle of panel doors.
There can be two heavy extruding aluminium pieces, which extend to the entire panel length on both sides, usually 1/16″ walled 1-5/8″ x 7/8″. The top of the jamb members will be cut during installation for getting a perfect fit for the panel into the door opening. Screws are fixed on to the top of the jamb through the channel, outer edges, and bottom.
There will be separate metal strips attached to the leading edge of the sliding door to lock panel door for additional security. The panel door locks are patio-style locks on the panel, which get secured into the locking strip.
